For those of you who want to get more involved with STeam, come to our New Member Kick-off Meeting on Monday, January 30th at 7pm in the Chinquapin room on the 4th floor of MLK! It will be the perfect time for those who are interested to learn about all 8 of our project groups: The Local, One Side Clean (OSC), Student Team on Zero Plastics (STOP), Fair Trade University (FTU), Composting, Earth Week, Focus the Nation, and End Coal Campaign, and just about STeam in general. I hope to see you there! This meeting is optional for old members because it will just be a general info session meeting.
Leadership, Recruitment and Campaign Planning Workshop is this Tuesday, January 31st from 7-9pm in 118 Barrows. STeam is working with GreenCorps to bring this FREE skills workshop to all student leaders and student groups involved in social activism. Learn how to become a more effective leader and inspire others to join your cause! Then learn how to keep them involved to help plan better campaigns, projects or events. Please email

FREE Admission to Basketball Game Feb 4. Reply TODAY
If you want free admission to the upcoming Cal men’s basketball game against Arizona State on Feb 4, why not volunteer and help educate fellow Cal fans on how to properly compost and recycle. The athletics department is running another Zero Waste Game pilot in an effort to be more sustainable. If you volunteer, you’ll be answering questions about which bins things go in, and you get to watch the game at the same time!

Focus the Nation Forum: is 100% Clean Energy Possible for UC Berkeley? February 7th, 6-9PM in Eshleman Library (STeam)
A FREE forum and collaborative discussion, featuring keynote speaker, Professor Daniel Kammen! Come be a part of energy innovation in action, and help us answer questions like:
- What are the economic barriers to kicking fossil fuels off campus?
- Can we be “100% clean” if we’re still investing in coal?
- How can we get solar panels on campus buildings?
- What kind of renewable energy commitment should we pass in the ASUC?
Buy and sell used textbooks within the Cal community!
www.calbooks.org is a simple site that enables people within the Cal community to buy and sell textbooks amongst each other. The idea is to encourage reuse, recycling, and sharing within the community, and to help students save money on textbooks.
The 2012-2013 CACS Meetings
Mark your calendars for this year’s CACS meetings. CACS general meetings are usually held from 3:30-5:00 pm on the 3rd Thursday of the month (Eshleman Senate Chambers), and CACS executive committee meetings are generally held on the 1stThursday of month in the A&E Building Second Floor Conference Room (with some exceptions due to holidays or the academic schedule).

Save the date! This years annual Sustainability Summit will be held April 19th, 2012, from 3-6PM.
UC Berkeley Sustainable Mobility Conference
The third and final conference in the series, Sustainable Economic Development Strategies in Lean Fiscal Times, will be held February 23 called “Sustainable Mobility & Cities: Marrying Technology and Policy” in Downtown Berkeley at the David Brower Center. The conference focuses on key policy debates and opportunities for using technology to improve our transportation system and cities. CA Higher Education Sustainability Conference: Call For Proposals Extended One WeekThe California Higher Education Sustainability Conference (CHESC), which takes place June 18th-22nd, 2012, highlights cutting-edge case studies as well as research, curriculum development, and community partnerships. The CHESC seeks speakers whom have crossed silos within their institutions to create sustainable change, infuse concepts of sustainability into curriculum, and/or to pursue research questions related to sustainability. CHESC is especially excited about proposals where a connection has been made across academic and operational departments.Campus staff, faculty, students, and administrators are encouraged to submit proposals on case studies, pilot programs, and replicable best practices. Introduction to Recycling Class
Sign up now for Introduction to Recycling in March. This will be the best class to learn about the great field of recycling. Taught by NCRA’s President and famous recycler Arthur Boone, this is an engaging can’t miss, even for those who have been in the field for awhile. Summer 2012 International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Student Sustainability Fellowship and ExchangeThe 2012 IARU Student Sustainability Fellowship provides one UC Berkeley undergraduate student with the opportunity to work on a campus sustainability project at one of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) member institutions. Projects will be institution-specific, but designed with the intention that lessons learned that can be applied at both the home and the host institution. The student exchange takes place for a six to eight week period between May and August 2012. The exact dates depend on the assigned University. To apply to be a 2012 IARU Sustainability Fellow, please submit a resume, a short statement of interest and qualifications, including language skills, availability, and preferred Universities (no more than one page), and two references to Judy Chess (jchess@cp.berkeley.edu) by 5:00 pm, Monday February 6th. Questions can also be sent to that email address. Finalists will be invited to an interview the week of February 13th. The successful candidate will be notified by February 17th and the Fellow will be matched to host institutions by mid-March. For more information, see the attached document.

Building off Bay Localize’s innovative Use Your Roof! program, our Green Your City program promotes a broad range of urban sustainability policies, technologies, and strategies. Given the increasing interest in urban agriculture, greywater, permaculture, and green solutions, we have a tremendous opportunity to harness grassroots enthusiasm to help meet the needs of our communities and boost our local economy. Support is needed to help with organizing and outreach for our emerging Grow Local urban ag campaign, conducting research, creating online resources, and assisting with a project at Laney College to boost composting rates on campus.The ideal candidate will be passionate about community resilience and local action! Primary responsibilities include:
- Organizing meetings for our Grow Local campaign and securing attendees
- Developing outreach materials (i.e., posters, fliers, and fact sheets)
- Getting the word out through community events and gatherings
- Assisting with Laney College composting project to help raise student awareness
Qualifications:
- Available 10 hours/week for a minimum of 3 months
- Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills
- Self-starter – need to be able to work with minimal supervision and feel comfortable asking questions when stuck
- Enthusiastic attitude
- Intermediate computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and databases
- Knowledge of issues relating to urban agriculture/food systems, ecological justice, and community resilience preferred
- Experience working with diverse populations preferred

Local Clean Energy Organizing InternThe Local Clean Energy Alliance (LCEA), the Bay Area’s largest clean energy coalition, with 90 affiliated member organizations, including environmental justice, social justice, environmental, business, and community groups. The Alliance seeks a motivated and organized intern to assist with our upcoming Clean Power, Healthy Communities conference. This is a great opportunity to gain experience on energy policy advocacy while providing needed assistance with our organizing efforts. This position is out of the office of the LCEA’s host organization, Bay Localize, in downtown Oakland. The internship includes a $320/month expense reimbursement and requires 10 hours/week, to be determined by the applicant and the LCEA. Women, LGBTQI, and people of color are strongly encouraged to apply.This position is supervised by the LCEA Coordinator. Primary responsibilities include:
- Helping reach out to speakers and allied organizations about participating at our 3rd annual Clean Power, Healthy Communities conference
- Helping to generate program agendas, panels, and ideas for the conference
- Assisting with securing conference co-sponsors
- Representing LCEA on phone and in-person at selected events
- Assisting with networking, outreach tasks, and event organizing, as needed
Qualifications:
- Available 10 hours/week for a minimum of 3 months
- Good organizing skills, including setting up meetings and events
- Basic technical skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel
- Responsible, very organized, and detail-oriented
- Good written and verbal communication and people skills, in-person and on the phone
- Quick learner who is interested in learning about local renewable energy systems, sustainable development, community resilience, and social justice
