Sustainable Foods Campaign


The Local

Steam created and currently runs the first ever UCB student cooperative organic vegetable / fruit stand on campus! "The Local" is open for business every Wednesday at our NEW LOCATION on Sproul Plaza in front of the MLK Student Union between the hours of 11am to 3pm. At this student-run stand, you can purchase locally-grown, sustainable produce at a reasonable price while supporting local small farmers. STeam utilizes The Local as a launching point for educational efforts on topics ranging from 'tracing your food system' to the carbon and environmental cost of conventional agriculture.

Steam is also currently working with Cal Dining to increase the amount of local, certified organic produce available in the campus dining halls. Over 400 freshmen have been surveyed regarding their desire to see more organic food options and have participated in taste tests between conventional and organic carrots. Steam has ongoing meetings with Cal Dining and is working with several NGO's and local suppliers of organic food to expedite organic sourcing.
