About Us
The Sustainability Team is a special program in ASUC established in Fall 2005. As a team, we create and implement a variety of projects that help establish sustainable practices and promote environmental awareness on campus. Project committees within STeam work as a tight unit to accomplish their goals, and leadership capacity is shared equally. STeam is headed by the ASUC Director of Environmental Sustainability (DES) and is institutionalized in the ASUC constitution (Title 26: ASUC Environmental Sustainability).STeam meets every week to update each other on the progress of our projects and brainstorm strategies for successful implementation, and project committees break out into small groups to work on their individual projects. STeam members are unpaid and commit a minimum of 5 hours a week to their projects. The team also spends time outside of meetings through our Steam Socials and Community Service days a few times per semester.Sustainability Team coordinated EarthWeek in both 2006 and 2007 to celebrate Earth Day and engage the campus community in solutions to environmental issues.
In Fall 2006 STeam partnered with SUPERB to host a Climate Change Fair which featured a screening of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," as well as many campus and community environmental organizations.
Since our founding, Sustainability Team has provided students with reduced free or cost reusable water bottles to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, other toxic pollutants and waste--especially popular are our reduced priced Klean Kanteen stainless steel water bottles!
In Spring 2007 STeam launched The Local, UC Berkeley's first-ever student-run, nonprofit, cooperative produce stand that sells only locally grown, pesticide free, fresh fruits and vegetables. They're especially affordable since the stnad is run completely by volunteers!
The Environmental Forum, which is now an independent student group, was initiated by STeamers as a way for the environmental community on campus to network and keep in touch. Come check it out Thursday August 30 at 7pm in the Senate Chambers on the 1st floor of Eshelman.
